The year-end holidays always make Urban Racer's edit staff sentimental about the past 12 months. Formula DRIFT - repping the biggest show in town, pro drifting - still seems on a promising trajectory, wildly popular and writing its own dramatic twists (like twice champion Tanner Foust's unexpected retirement and other signs of a changing of the old guard, or Dai Yoshihara's 2011 series title, the first for a Japanese driver in the American series). In other auto sport, X Games continued to help rallycross grow into a force, while the face of time attack changed in the U.S. with the shuttering of Redline Time Attack and inaugural season of Global Time Attack

URC Exclusive - BEST OF TOKYO MOTOR SHOW 2011
URC Exclusive-BEST OF TOKYO MOTOR SHOW 2011
This past Sunday the Tokyo Motor Show said "Peace out!" for another two years, and with intros of production RWD sport compacts the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ, the two-week long event stands a good chance of being remembered as one of those moments in automotive history where enthusiasts came out winning. Never mind that these low-budget sports cars were being released amid a torrent of green platforms (or that they are essentially the same car) - we have not seen this kind of energy or excitement surrounding a debut in a very long time.

The invitation to ditch the office last Friday and come spend an early afternoon with racers from Honda Performance Development (HPD) and Mazdaspeed - tuning divisions from American Honda and Mazda North American Operations, respectively - at Willow Springs International Raceway was very exclusive, very hush-hush, and we only needed to read it once before we had our answer: hell yes!

The newest generations of car lovers have learned that even before you ever get your hands on any ride you can first build it - at least cosmetically - to your liking in virtual reality. Editing software like Adobe Photoshop has facilitated enthusiast imaginations in a way unseen in history, allowing builders to experiment with parts and experience a project's visual impact before ever spending a single thin dime.

URC Exclusive-2013 LEXUS GS
Until recently, if someone mentioned the Lexus brand, the images that popped into most peoples' heads were likely of a female-piloted ES or RX 330 clogging the lane ahead. For enthusiasts, the brand that built its reputation on things like precision and quietness, was too quiet.

URC Exclusive-SCION FR-S GLOBAL PREMIERE
We were not lucky enough this year to be in Japan for the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show and more specifically catch the debuts of the much-anticipated Toyota 86 RWD sports coupe or its technological other half the Subaru BR-Z, a dream that alas was too far out of reach. But we were in Los Angeles, Calif. the night of Wednesday, November 30, to witness the reveal of a vehicle just as exciting, and just as expected - the production North American version of the platform, the Scion FR-S

Photos from the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show - running December 3 to 11 at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center - are already filtering onto the inter-webs, and while two hot sport compact production models are currently sharing the spotlight (the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ) there is a whole lot more going on at the biannual expo. The Japanese, still recovering from the horrible national calamity of a major earthquake and destructive tsunami this past March, continue to be some of the most forward-looking car visionaries anywhere and seem to lead the charge (no pun intended) to switching to alternative means of getting from point A to point B.

Toyota seems to be hedging its bets that its new 86 front engine, rear-wheel drive sports coupe co-engineered with Subaru - a platform that in development was referred to as the FT-86, Scion FR-S, and on the Subie side the BRZ - will be the only thing enthusiast media will be talking about this week. The North American press corps is waiting for the Scion production debut on Wednesday night in Los Angeles, while Wednesday morning on the other side of the Pacific Ocean (and some 26 hours earlier) the JDM iteration

URC Exclusive - BEST OF SEMA 2011
URC Exclusive-BEST OF SEMA 2011
In some ways, the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show is to the auto show season what the Daytona 500 is to the rest of the NASCAR season. They say Daytona, which is run in February each year to start the campaign, is the stock car series' most prestigious event every year (its "Super Bowl," if you will), and we'd argue the same about SEMA. Sure, LA, Detroit, Chicago, and New York all can boast concept and production world debuts of the cars we want, but the aftermarket show, which also uniquely starts the show "season," has fewer restrictions on creativity - that is, less interference by bean counters and focus groups that influence OEM fare - which makes for some insanely cool vehicles
