For two weekends in April, the city of Long Beach becomes the center of the motorsports universe by allowing a number of competition series to use its streets to do battle. For the last few years Formula DRIFT has opened up its season on Turns 9, 10 and 11 of the former-F1 track, while bodies like the Champ Car World Series, the American Le Mans Series and Formula Atlantic, among many others, have been dicing on these boulevards for much longer than that.

Saturday, March 29th, was a red letter day for me, because I was headed to the Formula D 2008 Pre-tech inspection at Super Autobacs USA in Stanton, Calif. It would be one of those rare opportunities I sometimes get to look at new competition machines en masse before the general public sees them in action. Pre-tech was essentially an opportunity for teams to get an idea of what may be left to do with their cars. The vehicles are checked for compliance with safety regulations as imposed by Formula D, as well as to ensure they meet all rules and regulations in regards to chassis, engine and suspension. Henry Chung from FD was on hand to make sure that all points were addressed and, as you'll read in a bit, not a lot of people actually passed

I always hear stories about people who hate their job, can't stand their boss, or wish they had done something different with their lives. I'm happy not to share that sentiment. I have a job that a lot of people would give a body part for. Working for the Sales and Marketing department at A'PEX USA, about the only thing that bothers me about the gig is the routine of getting to the train station from my Riverside house and making the hour trip to Orange, Calif.

At the recent media debut for the 2008 Chevy Cobalt SS, we were somewhat surprised to hear that General Motors, mega-corp. parent of Chevy, among many other automakers, is still exceedingly pleased with the winning performance of its Cobalt SS at the Toyo Tires Time Attack in November of 2005. Some two-and-a-half-years after the fact, in a market that they could easily overlook (like Ford kinda did when it forgot to provide its Focus line with a performance variant), the feat is still a source of pride for GM reps.

During a break between in-flight movies, 37,000 feet above Asia, I get to thinking about the adventure ahead. I had been waiting a long time to make this trip, far too long. My best buddy moved back to Australia five years ago, and this was the first opportunity I had to visit. I'd have seen him sooner, but you know how it is; life just gets in the way. In between buying cars, I've bought a house, paid for an upcoming wedding and various other expenses to get through each day.

I sat in the ACT booth at last year's SEMA show signing autographs and smiling for photos. With nearly every signature came the question: "How did you get all of your sponsors?" It wasn't that long ago that I didn't have any sponsors. I was a punky kid, sneaking into the Vegas show, handing out photocopies with a picture of my rally car.
