The three-day gathering began Friday, as Sols from as far as Florida descended on Sin City. The evening's meet and greet party allowed fellow enthusiasts to cozy up to one another, while those looking for some high-speed thrills headed over to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway for Midnight Mayhem racing.
Solers showed off their cars in Saturday's main event in the parking lot of the Bonanza Lounge Bar & Grill, while enjoying food, raffles, and an awards ceremony. Organizers handed out honors recognizing Best Audio, Interior, Engine, Stock Sol, Appearance, Greatest Distance Traveled, an Honorable Mention, and Most Dedicated. After the meet, Solers looked forward to their choice from a variety of scenic cruises, and the weekend topper was the Farewell Breakfast on Sunday.
Team Sol held its first Vegas Invasion meet in 2001. Organizers envisioned a gathering where del Sol enthusiasts from all over the United States could come together and celebrate cars and the camaraderie they inspired. For the Southern California-based organization, Las Vegas was an obvious choice to serve as host city. Its central location on the West Coast makes it accessible to many, and the number of hotels, inns, and motels allows virtually all members to find a place to stay that meets everyone's standards and budget. Of course, Vegas being one of the entertainment capitals of the world, there is never a shortage of things to do when the group's in town.
The first meet had nearly 30 del Sols and 45 members, and instantly became the largest del Sol meet in the United States and one of the largest in the world. Every year since, it has grown incrementally, last year boasting 54 Sols and around 90 members. Members from all over North America make the annual pilgrimage, and organizers expect future Invasions to continue to grow.
